Automobiles have come a long way, starting out as steam powered carriages, advancing to the gas guzzlers we know all too well and then improving even further into the eco-friendly vehicles nowadays. The history of automobiles is broken down into eras based on the upgrading of technology throughout time. The automobiles that we know and see today weren’t invented in one day, they have improved era after era into bigger, better and more efficient vehicles. During the late 1700’s is when the first steam powered carriages were invented. At this point they weren’t even considered cars basically it was a horse carriage with wooden wheels which was powered by a single piston steam engine. In the 1800’s through the early 1900’s many different companies starting inventing vehicles. This was known as the Veteran Era, automobiles were being invented but they were seen more as novelty items rather than a useful device.

There were too many negative factors; the cars easily broke down, fuel was hard to come by and finding suitable roads to travel on was very hard to do. As the late 1950’s came about the automotive industry had expanded adding front wheel drive, all wheel drive and the V6 engine configuration to new vehicles. Engine power and vehicle speeds rose, the designs improved and the new ‘updated’ automobiles became more popular. The modern era is classified as the 25 years proceeding the current year. Automobiles have definitely changed throughout the years; today we notice hatchbacks, mini-vans, eco-friendly cars and SUVs’ on the road. Each vehicle make and model advancing year after year. Who knows what the future holds when it comes to the making of automobiles.
